Enbridge Gas Distribution Inc.: Be "SNOW Safe"

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Feb. 2, 2011) - Keep your home, business and seasonal property "SNOW Safe" by keeping natural gas meters, pressure regulators and appliance exhaust vents free of snow and ice.

Enbridge Gas Distribution Inc. reminds customers to take the following steps this winter:

Shovel safely: Use extra caution when using a shovel, plow or snow blower near gas equipment or appliance vents – use a broom or car brush to gently clear snow or ice, not sharp objects or force such as kicking or hitting.

- Never pile snow against gas equipment or appliance exhaust vents: They need to be visible to snow blower and plow operators and you don't want to block your vents as this could cause dangerous carbon monoxide to build up indoors.

- Observe gas equipment and vents regularly: Check your natural gas meter, pressure regulator and appliance exhaust vents regularly to ensure they are clear of snow and ice. Remember that snow can accumulate around equipment and vents not just after a snowfall, but when an accumulation of snow falls off a roof. Also, if you have a seasonal property or are away on vacation, make sure that someone is checking your property for you.

Watch for water: Fix leaky seams in or around downspouts and eavestroughs to prevent water from dripping on gas equipment and appliance vents where it can form ice.

If snow or ice build-up on natural gas meters or regulators cannot be gently removed with a broom or car brush, call Enbridge Gas Distribution for assistance at 1-877-Enbridge (362-7434).

If you need help to clear a blocked appliance vent, contact your heating contractor. If you do not have one, you can look one up online or in the phone book under Heating Contractors.

We also remind customers to make sure we can reach you by ensuring we have your current telephone phone number.
