TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - April 22, 2010) - Enbridge Gas Distribution (TSX:ENB) (NYSE:ENB)
With the warm weather approaching, Earth Day® is the perfect time to think about ways to reduce energy use during the warm months ahead.
"Doing our part to support an efficient and cleaner energy future is an ongoing commitment at Enbridge," said Janet Holder, President, Enbridge Gas Distribution. "Earth Day® is a great time to think about what more we could be doing as a company and as individuals."
Enbridge Gas Distribution encourages customers to follow simple energy-savings tips that can help protect the environment and save money too. Here are some tips on how to use energy wisely this spring and summer:
Clean or replace the natural gas furnace filter. Maintaining your furnace regularly, even during warmer months, helps ensure the system operates at peak efficiency. Cleaning or replacing the filter will also help the central air conditioner provide better air flow.
Install energy efficient showerheads and aerators. This can help lower water consumption and reduce natural gas use when installed in kitchens and bathrooms.
Use a programmable thermostat. Using a programmable thermostat makes setting temperatures easy. To keep your home cool during the warmer months, set your thermostat at about 24 degrees celsius (75 degrees fahrenheit).
Close your drapes or shades. Windows are one of the largest sources of heat gain in your home. Keeping drapes and shades closed during the day will help keep unwanted summer heat out of your home.
Shade your home and windows. Careful planting of trees, shrubs, vines and groundcover to shade your home and windows from the sun can really reduce your cooling costs.
Consider using ceiling fans to help save energy. Ceiling fans can create enough air movement to make a room feel cooler, creating less reliance on air conditioning.
Plug the leaks in your home. Caulk and weather-strip doors and windows, shrink wrap existing windows, install foam gaskets and childproof socket plugs or install ENERGY STAR® qualified windows to keep cool air in to help reduce your energy costs.
