TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Oct. 8, 2009) – Today Enbridge Gas Distribution (TSX:ENB) (NYSE:ENB)announced that it is offering a new energy saving Drain Water Heat Recovery Program that will help home builders make new homes more energy efficient.
The Power-Pipe® units, developed and manufactured by RenewABILITY Energy Inc. of Waterloo, Ontario, make it possible to recover the waste heat from the outgoing drain water and reuse it by heating the incoming cold fresh water ‑ they are available in 48" and 60" lengths. The Power-Pipe® is a heat exchanger that has several sets of copper coils tightly wrapped around a copper drain pipe.
Here's how it works:
- As warm to hot water flows down the drain it heats the Power-Pipe® before leaving the house.
- At the same time, cold fresh water coming into the house passes up through the Power-Pipe's outer coils and is heated.
- The result is that a water heater does not have to work as hard, so energy costs go down. The 60" unit, for example, will help reduce water heating costs by up to 35% according to Natural Resources Canada.
- Drain water never mixes with the fresh water – it is only the heat that is transferred.
Incorporating this technology into new homes will help reduce the energy required to heat water, which results in ongoing savings on water heating costs and reduced greenhouse gas emissions.
"Offering innovative energy efficiency solutions is one way Enbridge brings added value to our partners in the builder community," said Arunas Pleckaitis, Vice President, Enbridge Gas Distribution. "This program is a win-win – builders can offer their home buyers more energy efficient homes and home buyers can feel good about reducing their energy costs and helping the environment."
Through Enbridge Gas Distribution's Drain Water Heat Recovery Program, 860 Power-Pipe® units are available for free to new home builders until December 31, 2009, with a limit of one free unit per address.
Home builders can participate in Enbridge's new Drain Water Heat Recovery Program, which is recognized by the ENERGY STAR® for New Homes Program, by contacting their rental water heater representative.
