Enbridge Gas Distribution: Natural Gas Continues Flowing During Blackout
TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Jan. 16, 2009) - Enbridge Gas Distribution (TSX:ENB) (NYSE:ENB) announced today that the delivery of natural gas to Enbridge Gas Distribution's residential, commercial and industrial customers is not interrupted by the power disruption in Toronto.
Natural gas appliances that do not require an external electric power source, such as natural gas ranges, barbecues, water heaters, boilers and some furnaces, will continue to operate during a power outage. However, appliances that require an electrical spark to activate the burner or rely on electricity to power fans and motors will shut down until the electricity is restored. Natural gas appliances must continue to be used as stated in the manufacturer's certified instructions. Appliances such as gas ranges must not be used as heating sources. Barbecues and outdoor heating equipment should not be used in homes or garages.
Customers are encouraged to have a heightened focus on safety and be alert to any potential safety issues resulting from the power outage. For example, telephones, carbon monoxide and smoke detectors that require electricity will not be operational. Ensure the proper and safe use of candles, fireplaces and fuel burning appliances and make sure you have access to a working phone for emergencies.
If you smell gas or suspect you have a gas leak or carbon monoxide build up, evacuate the home or building immediately. Do not use the phone or cellular phone in your home. Do not use lighters, candles or matches and do not smoke. Do not turn electrical switches or appliances on or off. If you can, leave doors and/or windows open to allow air to enter. Once outside the building, call the Enbridge Gas Distribution Emergency Line at 1-866-763-5427 from a cell phone, a neighbour's or a public phone to report it. An Enbridge Gas Distribution representative will be sent to your home as soon as possible.
